Cassandra

My name is Cassandra and I've had Rheumatoid Arthritis for over 16 years.

Diagnosis was a relief when it finally came because it was wonderful to finally know that there was really something wrong with my body. I wasn't 'lazy, depressed or seeking attention' which was what most people said. It was also a relief to my family because they didn't have to be helpless anymore.

It didn't stop weird situations from occurring though. Once, I went dancing all night which I paid for with inflamed joints. One of my dance partners saw me hobbling around with my trusty walking stick 2 days later and screamed. "What happened? Were you attacked? Was it an accident? How could something so terrible have happened to you and you didn't tell me?" It was a while before I stopped laughing long enough to explain things to her.

Living with RA has taught me that laughter truly is the best medicine. Learning appreciation for life, self and my loved ones has given me renewed appreciation for the little things. With good medication and lifestyle changes, I've been able to return to work and a normal life. I might be more fragile physically but I've learnt that strength comes in so many different forms.

My dream is to help other Rheumatoid Arthritis patients look at the ways their lives have changed for the better instead of concentrating on the ugly.
